The Malaysian Culture

Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures, with a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences. The country is known for its diverse cultural heritage, which is reflected in its food, language, customs, and traditions.

Taboo

Each of the ethnic group also has their own taboo which we should respect and follow.

Malay

  • Must give 'salam' when entering an empty house as it can cast away the unseen entity.
  • Wear politely when visiting their home.
  • Don't wear the shoes when entering their house.
  • Avoid eating non-halal foods in front of them.

Chinese

  • Refrain from using foul language or speaking inauspicious words such as 'die', 'poor' .
  • No sweeping. Reason: It will sweep away wealth.
  • Don't whistle at night Reason: Ghosts and spirits will come out.
  • Keep away from number '4'. Reason: Is a homophone of the Chinese character '死', which means 'die'.

Indian

  • Only touch food with the right hand.
  • Wash the hands before and after eating.
  • Feet and shoes are considered dirty. Don't step over the place that the person sitting or lying.
  • When visiting temples or entering an Indian home, remove footwear and hats. Dress conservatively in a way that expresses respect for the place of worship or household.
